VMF in Continuous / Perfusion processes

In this example, the Vibro® Membrane Filtration (VMF) technology is used as perfusion device to retain cells in the bioreactor and to harvest API in the permeate from VMF1.

An example perfusion process using Vibro Membrane Filtration (VMF) to recover the API and retain cells.

Description:

In upstream processing, Vibro Membrane Filtration (VMF) can act as a cell retention device in perfusion processes. Both mammalian cells such as CHO as well as alternatives such as Pichia pastoris can be efficiently processed, achieving up to 100% separation efficiency, high concentration factors and robust long-term performance with minimal fouling and shear. Integration into both batch and continuous processes is possible.

In the shown process, VMF is used to treat the bleed stream by harvesting API and removing concentrated cells with reduced API loss.

The harvest/API can then be up-concentrated and purified using VMF to extend capture/Z1 column capacity and lifetime during chromatography.

A similar setup can be applied to other cell-based applications such as cultivated meat, cell therapy, etc.
